African Student Association

Hardin-Simmons University is home to a robust number of international students representing various countries and traditions. In 2019, students formed the African Student Association (ASA) as a way to share their various African cultures with each other and the rest of the campus. Along with providing educational opportunities and friendship, ASA has provided a tight-knit community for HSU’s African students to experience college together.
Mattia Kamanzi, president of ASA, said of the organization’s impact, “it is a good feeling when you are around people who understand the way you think and act, which is rare to find in a foreign country.”
ASA regularly hosts events open to the entire campus, including game nights and worship nights. Recently, ASA organized a brunch in collaboration with the African Student Association of ACU. Rather than creating a program, both ASA groups used the morning to socialize with each other and develop friendships. “I got to meet new people from my country which was the highlight of the event for me,” shared Kamanzi.
The African Student Association is not limited to African students only. Anyone is welcome to join. If learning about various cultures and meeting new people are appealing to you, this organization is for you!
